COURSE OBJECTIVES
Better contracts mean better business
In-house counsel communicate constantly: advising internal clients, influencing senior leadership, aligning with peers, and performing under pressure in contentious settings. The technical quality of legal advice is rarely the limiting factor. Impact is. This course focuses on the practical communication skills that determine whether your input is heard, trusted, and acted upon.
Strategic communication entails learning to direct attention, frame risk and options clearly, and project credibility consistently across meetings, calls, presentations, and difficult conversations. The programme translates proven communication principles into tools that work in the realities of corporate legal roles: time constraints, sceptical stakeholders, high stakes, and complex subject matter.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?
1) The 3Vs: visual, verbal, vocal
How meaning is carried through what people see, what you say, and how you say it. You will learn to align these channels so your message lands as intended, not merely as written.
2) Non-verbal communication that supports authority
Posture, eye contact, pace, presence, and signalling. How to avoid undermining your own message – especially when delivering risk, disagreement, or bad news.
3) Convincing and persuading without “selling”
How to move stakeholders from information to decision. Techniques for creating traction with executives and internal clients who are busy, sceptical, or outcome-driven.
4) Beyond dry facts: the heart, head, body approach
Facts alone often fail to change behaviour. You will learn to combine rational structure (head), emotional resonance (heart), and embodied delivery (body) to increase retention and commitment without sacrificing rigour.
5) Embodying leadership and inspiring confidence
How to communicate like a trusted adviser rather than a technical specialist. Clear recommendations, calm delivery, and confident handling of challenge—without aggression or over-claiming.
6) Communication as team capability
How communication patterns shape team effectiveness: alignment, psychological safety, escalation, and shared ownership. Practical tools for stronger collaboration within legal teams and with the business.
OUTCOMES
By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:
deliver clearer, more actionable legal advice that prompts decisions rather than debate
increase credibility through aligned verbal and non-verbal delivery
persuade stakeholders using structure and framing suited to corporate environments
handle challenge, disagreement, and pressure with composure and control
strengthen communication norms inside the legal function and across stakeholders
